- Store items in order of how often you will need to access them while in storage; the items you won’t need to access should be placed toward the back of the unit and the items you may have more need to access to the front.
- Label your boxes in a way that you can easily see the labels when you store them.
- Using uniform box sizes allows for easier stacking, stability and better use of the space.
- Place heavier boxes at the bottom of stacks and do not overstuff boxes.
- Block your refrigerator and freezer doors open to prevent the growth of mildew.
- A lot of furniture can be disassembled and doing so will allow you to use less space for each piece.
- When possible, leave yourself a walkway in the center of the storage unit to make things easier to find.
- Shelving is encouraged as long as it is not attached to the storage unit walls. It’s a great way to organize your belongings.
- Unless you have an air-conditioned storage unit, never cover your furniture with plastic sheeting. Doing so will only hold humidity’s moisture close to your furniture. Instead, use fabric sheeting.
- Good storage practice suggests keeping goods away from direct contact with the concrete floors. Pallets may be used or plastic sheeting on the floor.
- Never store combustible or explosive materials in a storage unit. Always drain gasoline from lawn mowers or other machines.
- When storing a vehicle inside a storage unit, cover the floor underneath the vehicle with a protective barrier and always disconnect the battery.
